Rare and wonderful 1880s Victorian mourning black petticoat created from a fine polished cotton featuring rows of ruffles at the hem and an a-line shape. This lovely piece was likely made for a wealthier woman who was in full mourning down to her foundation garments! Unlined but opaque, tie closure at hip. This garment was originally worn as an undergarment, so there is a slit beneath the tie closure that will show unless you were something under or over it.
MEASUREMENTS: (taken with garment lying flat; waist & hips doubled for your convenience) →waist: 30-32 inches (some adjustability due to tie closure) →hips: open →length: 38.5 inches →sweep: 41.5 inches flat
ESTIMATED SIZE: Medium-Large; pinned on dressform
CONDITION: Very good antique condition with a few moth nibbles and a tear at the underside of the hem that's hidden by ruffles; there may have been another tier of ruffles at one point further up, and stitching is lightly visible. Please keep in mind this is an antique garment, which means minor signs of wear are to be expected. Any significant flaws are always noted in the description. All garments are mended, cleaned and ready to wear unless otherwise noted.
MORE INFORMATION: No maker or contents labels; either homemade very well or tailor-made, but doesn't seem commercial. Seems to be made of polished cotton. Hand wash.
PLEASE NOTE: Black Cat Clothiers only accepts returns if a mistake was made in describing the garment, for which we ask you to contact us within 3 days of receiving the garment. Please compare the detailed measurements noted above to one of your garments that fits you well. Please be aware all monitors display colors differently. Additionally, all of our clothing is pre-owned and vintage/antique, which means each piece may feature minor signs of wear, as noted in the description. To learn more, please view our store policies.
