Bewitching beyond belief 1880s Victorian mourning mantle cape crafted from crisp silk faille and adorned with jet beading in the shape of stars. Dripping with black chantilly-style lace and adorned with a high, ruffled collar, this cape is by far one of the best I've handled and just takes my breath away. There is an even a tiny black pouch sewed into the lining - perhaps holding a memento of a lost loved one, like a lock of hair, but I have not investigated and will let this garment keep its secrets. An amazing addition to any collection. Fully lined, four hook & eye closures at front. Eligible for layaway, please contact me for more information.
MEASUREMENTS: (taken with garment lying flat; bust, waist & hips doubled for your convenience) →collar: 13 inches around →shoulder to shoulder: 16 inches →bust: open due to shape →length: 27.5 inches + lace trim
ESTIMATED SIZE: X-Small to Medium; watch the collar as it is quite tight! This was definitely made for a smaller wearer and will look most flattering worn as so.
CONDITION: Excellent antique condition -- I can't believe how well it's held up! There is a bit of bead loss, as this beading is comprised entirely of tiny seed beads, but due to the pattern, it's not noticeable. There are some worn spots in the lining, but they don't appear to be actively shattering when handled, so as long as it's treated with respect, it should be fine. There are a few tiny pockmarks in the outer fabric. Some of the threading and cording has gone a bit brown, but it's not very noticeable, and the lace is perhaps not as inky black in direct light as it was 100+ years ago. This piece is remarkably wearable and just so beautiful. Please keep in mind this is a vintage garment, which means minor signs of wear are to be expected. Any significant flaws are always noted in the description. All garments are mended, cleaned and ready to wear unless otherwise noted.
MORE INFORMATION: No maker or contents label, but certainly professionally made. Appears to be made of a silk faille with a cotton lining, with jet beads and nylon lace.
PLEASE NOTE: Black Cat Clothiers cannot accept returns due to fit. Please compare the detailed measurements noted above to one of your garments that fits you well. Additionally, all of our clothing is pre-owned and vintage/antique, which means each piece may feature minor signs of wear, as noted in the description. To learn more, please view our store policies.
