Breathtaking and opulent late 1880s Victorian mourning overblouse created from a high-shine black silk featuring a gorgeous cape detail, pleated cuffs, decorative ruching and architectural pleats throughout the back. This overblouse is absolutely stunning when worn over Victorian pieces or donned as a jacket over more modern wear. It was sold at Joseph Horne Co., which opened in 1849 in Pittsburgh, PA and quickly became part of popular culture. Andy Warhorl worked there in the 40s, the shop is referenced in Twin Peaks and it appeared in a 1980s erotic thriller. What a gorgeous, special piece from a wonderful institution! Unlined, no closures. Eligible for layaway, please contact me for more details.
MEASUREMENTS: (taken with garment lying flat; bust, waist & hips doubled for your convenience) →shoulder to shoulder: 15 inches →bust: best for up to 36 inches →waist: open →hips: open →length: 27.5 inches →sleeve length: 20.5 inches + cuff →wrist opening: 9 inches
ESTIMATED SIZE: Medium; the open construction of this garment allows for more wiggle room, and it's attractive when worn oversized, as shown on model. The sleeves are a modern width as well.
CONDITION: Excellent antique condition. There are a few moth nibbles throughout; the worst is pictured. I have hand repaired some seam separations (and it looks like I wasn't the first), so there may be a bit of weakness a few inches below the underarms alongside the back of the coat, but these repairs are not visible and should cause no problem if worn with care. Please keep in mind this isn antique garment, which means minor signs of wear are to be expected. Any significant flaws are always noted in the description. All garments are mended, cleaned and ready to wear unless otherwise noted.
MORE INFORMATION: By Joseph Horne Co. Made in USA. Appears to be made of silk. Lightly steam as needed.
