Breathtakingly beautiful and insanely rare 1890s Victorian silk bodice & skirt ensemble. Garments like these are often only seen in museums and very rarely survive changes in ownership in the years, so I am thrilled to offer this one for your consideration. This set is done in a floral, black silk stripe over a bright orange cotton muslin. It consists of a pigeon-breasted bodice featuring brocade straps, a cold shoulder detail, trumpet sleeves and light-as-air gathered silk details with a row of hooks & eyes up the back. The skirt is very full, would look tremendous with a petticoat or a bustle, and is a full foot longer in the back than the front, creating a gorgeous but wearable train. It closes with two sets of hook & eyes at the back. This set comes with two extra floral elements that can be pinned as you wish, as well as an additional length of fabric for repairs. I simply cannot believe they have all remained together and in such good condition all this time! This ensemble was certainly custom-made by a talented, skilled creator for an exacting, fashionable client who was not afraid of taking risks - orange was often considered an unfashionable color for ladies to wear, but this dress's original owner did not care much for opinions of the time! Please just let me know if you would like any additional photographs.
Please note this ensemble will only be sold as a complete set to a client who understands and respects its place in fashion history. Under no circumstances will I break this set up in any way.
MEASUREMENTS: (taken with garment lying flat; bust, waist & hips doubled for your convenience)
SKIRT →waist: 22 inches (hook & eyes could be moved, no more than up to 24 inches, but please note I do like the placement of them for longevity in terms of structural integrity while wearing) →hips: 36 inches →length: 42 inches in front, 54 inches in back
ESTIMATED SIZE: X-Small to Small; to fill out the proportions correctly, this garment should be worn with a corset.
CONDITION: Excellent antique condition. This garment is structurally sound and in amazing condition. The only flaws I note are a few places were the silk outer is a bit stressed, as pictured -- the most noticeable is at the bodice pigeon gather. The muslin cotton, which is what will take the brunt of the stress while worn, is in excellent condition. There is a bit of ground-in dirt at the hem of the dress, hidden entirely by a flounce, that I did not attempt to remove as the orange muslin is a dye-run concern. The silk outer was reattached to the muslin lining toward the closure and the hook was secured. This garment is in incredibly wonderful condition for its age, but please note it is more than a hundred years old and must be treated with care to preserve its longevity. It is absolutely wearable, but with respect. Please keep in mind this is a vintage garment, which means minor signs of wear are to be expected. Any significant flaws are always noted in the description. All garments are mended, cleaned and ready to wear unless otherwise noted.
COLOR: Black floral stripe outer with orange muslin lining
MORE INFORMATION: Likely custom-made for a wealthy client. No maker labels. Appears to be made of silk & cotton muslin. Professional, preservationist antique cleaning only.
PLEASE NOTE: Because sizing varies greatly based on year, brand and garment type, we recommend you compare the measurements noted above to an article of clothing you already own that fits you well. All garments are measured lying flat unless otherwise noted. Black Cat Clothiers cannot accept returns due to fit, so please pay careful attention to these measurements and ask questions before purchasing! Additionally, all of our clothing is pre-owned and vintage, which means each piece may feature minor signs of wear. Take a look at our store policies for more information.
