Spellbinding antique 1890s Victorian silk & lace mantle cape featuring stunning chantilly lace trim and French jet beading, including amazing star-shaped beads. An absolutely bewitching piece of Victoriana and fashion! Le Bon Marché, the famous French department store, was founded in 1839 as a popular shop for selling assorted dry goods. The entrepreneur Aristide Boucicaut completely revamped it in 1852. This piece bears his name, likely indicating it was part of a house line as Boucicaut expanded the offerings. The MET has a few similar pieces in their collection you can view digitally! Eligible for layaway, please contact me for details.
MEASUREMENTS: (taken with garment lying flat; bust, waist & hips doubled for your convenience) →collar: 14 inches →shoulder to shoulder: 16 inches →length: 32 inches
ESTIMATED SIZE: X-Small to Medium; most important measurement is collar and shoulders!
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. This garment presents beautifully and is wearable with care and excellent for display. The silk lining was completely shattered when it came to me; I've removed it. It could be re-lined if you'd like for a bit more stability and wearability. I left some silk in the interior seams and though it's a bit dry, it's holding up. The exterior silk faille is on the delicate side with some spots of wear, but shouldn't be an issue if handled properly. The thread on some of the beading has faded and there are some missing beads, particularly the dangling portions -- but it's not noticeable until inspected. Priced accordingly but so wonderful if treated with respect! Please keep in mind this is a vintage garment, which means minor signs of wear are to be expected. Any significant flaws are always noted in the description. All garments are mended, cleaned and ready to wear unless otherwise noted.
MORE INFORMATION: By Au Bon Marche. Made in France. Appears to be made of silk faille, cotton lace and glass beading.
