Positively bewitching and undoubtedly jaw-dropping late 1800s / early 1900s Victorian Mourning cape created from a delicious black crepe and featuring an open front, attached scarf detail that can be worn around the neck or draped, and the most perfect drape. And don't forget that label, The Mourning Shop in Philadelphia! In the last photo, you can see an advertisement for the shop I found online in an 1882 newspaper (the title and address are slightly different, but Jones & Fisher are the owners of the Mourning Shop according to further research, so I'd say this ad is an earlier/later iteration!) Suffice to say, this piece is an absolute treasure and I almost can't bear to part with it. Despite its creation so many moons ago, there is something about the simple silhouette and incredible movement that is so modern! Drape it over your shoulders before an evening spent becoming moon drunk with the fey. Self-lined, sheer, no closures. Eligible for layaway, please contact me for more information.
MEASUREMENTS: (taken with garment lying flat; bust, waist & hips doubled for your convenience) →shoulder to shoulder: best for 14-18 inches →bust: open →length: 43 inches →collar width: 5 inches
ESTIMATED SIZE: One size fits most; as long as the shoulders and length are appropriate for you, this garment should fit, though it may fit differently than on my size 4 dress form.
CONDITION: Excellent, nearly mint (can you believe it?!) antique condition. I spied one or two pinholes at the very hem when held up to light, but that's it. The crepe is as deliciously textured as the day it was made. No fading in sight, minus the stitching at the collar, which has browned -- not noticeable when worn. Please keep in mind this is an antique garment, which means minor signs of wear are to be expected. Any significant flaws are always noted in the description. All garments are mended, cleaned and ready to wear unless otherwise noted.
MORE INFORMATION: By The Mourning Shop. Appears to be made of a medium weight crepe. Antique preservationist / experienced dry clean only.
PLEASE NOTE: Black Cat Clothiers cannot accept returns due to fit. Please compare the detailed measurements noted above to one of your garments that fits you well. Additionally, all of our clothing is pre-owned and vintage/antique, which means each piece may feature minor signs of wear, as noted in the description. To learn more, please view our store policies.
