Absolutely otherworldly and so unusual late 1890s / early 1900s Victorian mourning cutwork cape featuring a baroque floral pattern with netting, stand ruffle collar and matching trim with overlaid fringe. A breathtaking addition to any collection and absolutely wearable with care. The design and skill of the cutwork is just incredible, and the overall style and shape of this piece is everything I could hope for! This garment is by far one of the best I've handled and I'm proud to present it in the shop. Fully lined with silk, hook & eye closures at front. Eligible for layaway, please contact me for more details.
MEASUREMENTS: (taken with garment lying flat; bust, waist & hips doubled for your convenience) →collar: 15 inches →shoulder to shoulder: 17 inches →bust: open →length: 26 inches
ESTIMATED SIZE: Medium is the best fit here, but what really matters is your neck and shoulder measurements -- I think this could work for a variety of folks.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition with some things to note. Firstly, the silk lining had ripped away from the seam at the collar. I've carefully repaired it, but the tearing was uneven, so there is some buckling/rippling. There was a long vertical tear to the silk interior near the hooks that I've repaired. The netting between the cutwork areas has worn away in some places, but this isn't noticeable when worn. The silk ruffle hem has some vertical tears and holes, but due to the layering, it's most unnoticeable. The silk there is a bit too dry to withstand repairs, which is also worth noting -- nothing seems like it's going to rip during careful wear, but if a piece of the silk is caught on something, I imagine it would tear. All in all, this is an incredibly rare and stunning garment that presents beautifully. Please keep in mind this is a vintage garment, which means minor signs of wear are to be expected. Any significant flaws are always noted in the description. All garments are mended, cleaned and ready to wear unless otherwise noted.
MORE INFORMATION: No maker or contents labels, but seems professionally made. Appears to be made of silk and wool.
PLEASE NOTE: Black Cat Clothiers only accepts returns if a mistake was made in describing the garment, for which we ask you to contact us within 3 days of receiving the garment.
