1890s Victorian Mourning Jet Mantel Cape

Regular price $138.00 Sale

Absolutely bewitching and rare 1890s Victorian Mourning mantel cape featuring netting made of jet beading, beaded accents along the mantel and a high neckline. Just dripping with elegance and witchery! This piece was likely professionally made and purchased by a wealthy client in the late 1800s. Few of these pieces remain in wearable condition, so I'm very excited to have this one in the shop! This piece is fully lined with hook & eye closures at the front.

MEASUREMENTS:
(taken with garment lying flat; bust, waist & hips doubled for your convenience)
→collar: 14 inches
→shoulder to shoulder: 13 inches
→length: 17 inches

ESTIMATED SIZE: X-Small to Small; despite open construction, this is best sizing to preserve the garment.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. This piece is perfectly wearable with care & respect, which is worlds better than a lot of the jet beading pieces I see nowadays. There are a few things to note: first and foremost, beading loss, both in the fringe {worst at the front; I would remove it entirely} and a swoop of beading on the back, all pictured. The netting on the right side of the cape has become hitched up at the bottom, and there are some holes and fraying to the netting overall. There is discoloration on the fabric, most notably on the back; see photos. Lastly, there is a little bit of tearing on the inside silk lining, but I don't think it's shattering, and seems sturdy as is. This is great chance to own one of these magnificent jet Victorian mourning pieces if you don't mind a bit of imperfections, as this would normally be priced somewhere between $200-300! Please keep in mind this is a vintage garment, which means minor signs of wear are to be expected. Any significant flaws are always noted in the description. All garments are mended, cleaned and ready to wear unless otherwise noted.

COLOR: Black

MORE INFORMATION: No maker or contents labels, but seems to have been professionally made due to size tag. Appears to be made of a rayon faille with jet beading and silk lining. Steam very lightly with nozzle at least 3 inches from fabric. Unless you know a true wizard, I would not trust any kind of cleaner with this piece.

PLEASE NOTE: Black Cat Clothiers cannot accept returns due to fit. Please compare the detailed measurements noted above to one of your garments that fits you well. Additionally, all of our clothing is pre-owned and vintage/antique, which means each piece may feature minor signs of wear, as noted in the description. To learn more, please view our store policies.
