Rare and bewitching late 1890s / early 1900s Victorian mourning beaded necklace featuring a simple loop of graduated beads. Many beaded necklaces of this style are sold as mourning, but most are from a later era or were originally worn as fashion jewelry. This lovely strand features what I believe to be unpolished Whitby jet beads, which have a satin finish to indicate early stages of mourning, as well as black enamel on the closure -- careful work to ensure the entire necklace reflected the wearer was in deep mourning. Wear alone with an Edwardian lawn gown as a memento mori or pair with a tangle of strange necklaces. Barrel & pin closure at back.
**A note: the material of the beads was difficult to suss out as all the usual tests were inconclusive! I believe it's most likely Whitby jet, as mentioned in the description, but it could be vulcanite or perhaps molded bog oak. I've priced this piece to indicate I'm not 100% sure of the material used.**
MEASUREMENTS: →length: 32 inches
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. There's a few light scuffs to the some of the beads and the black enamel on the clasp is a bit worn off. Lastly, this appears to be hand-strung on cotton string, so there can be a bit of a small gap between the beads. This is easy to address and does not impact presentation. Please keep in mind this is a vintage garment, which means minor signs of wear are to be expected. Any significant flaws are always noted in the description. All garments are mended, cleaned and ready to wear unless otherwise noted.
MORE INFORMATION: No maker or content hallmarks. Appears to be made of Whitby jet. Wipe clean with a lightly damp cloth as needed.
